Austrian state parliaments enter extended summer recess, some sitting 84 days

The Tirol regional parliament and state government will pause legislative work for an extended summer break. After the last session on 2 July, the 36 members of the Landtag and eight cabinet ministers will not reconvene until 30 September, resulting in an 89‑day recess that far exceeds the 66‑day school holidays for roughly 100,000 students.

In Upper Austria, the Landtag adjourned after eleven plenary meetings and exactly 100 committee days. The next session is scheduled for 1 October, with only four committee days planned in September, creating an 84‑day hiatus while schools enjoy a 63‑day vacation. Speakers highlighted bipartisan cooperation, noting that 78 of 132 decisions were adopted unanimously, though some observers questioned the length of the break amid ongoing crises.

Both regions emphasize that parliamentary work continues through committees and public engagements even during the formal recess, but critics argue that such long pauses may send a weak signal about political responsiveness.
