Austrian Survey Shows Majority Plan Summer Holiday by Car

A recent representative study by insurer Helvetia found that 56% of Austrians intend to travel to their summer vacation destinations by car, valuing the flexibility and independence the mode offers. About 54% feel safer driving than flying, and preparation is a priority: 89% research their route, 79% conduct a vehicle check, and 79% review traffic rules of the destination country. Smartphone readiness is also important, with 86% ensuring their phone is fully charged for longer drives. Stress over unfamiliar routes affects 44% of respondents, rising to 51% among Generation Z. Generational differences appear in vehicle checks: 84% of boomers examine tyre pressure and oil levels, compared with 70% of Gen‑Z drivers. Andreas Gruber, Helvetia Austria’s head of damage‑accident, emphasized, “Just before holiday trips it becomes clear how important preparation is. Route, vehicle condition, traffic rules and reachability are simple points that contribute to safety and relaxation.” The study, based on a May 2026 survey of 1,000 Austrians aged 14‑75, underscores the continued preference for car travel despite environmental and traffic concerns.
