Austrian towns Lustenau and St. Johann highlighted in Greenpeace green‑space study

Greenpeace analysed green‑space shares in the centre districts of 80 Austrian towns using satellite data. Lustenau ranked first nationally with 55.3% green area, followed by Rankweil (49.5%) and Hohenems (45.2%). The study noted that higher green‑area percentages help reduce the number of extreme summer heat days.

In the same survey, St. Johann im Pongau recorded the most heat days last year (22), despite a relatively high centre‑green share of 39.7%. Bischofshofen (21 heat days, 21.1% green) and the capital city Salzburg (19 heat days, 29.7% green) followed. Greenpeace urges Austrian municipalities to increase urban greenery to meet a 45% threshold for the “Nature‑City‑Pioneer” label and to adopt a “Nature‑City‑Guarantee” committing to expanded green space and cooling benefits.
