Austrian greening push amid Europe heatwave deaths

Overview

A June 2026 Greenpeace study linked the low share of green space in Austria’s 80 largest cities to the highest number of days above 30 °C, prompting a call for a legally binding “NaturStadt‑Garantie” and the de‑paving of large parking lots. In early July, Steyr and Ebreichsdorf were named the first “NaturStadt‑Pioniere,” and Greenpeace asked the climate minister to allocate €1 billion for municipal tree planting, soil‑unsealing and new green corridors. The Greens also pushed for tenancy reforms requiring external shading, solar‑film windows and balcony greening.

On 15 July, after AGES recorded 449 heat‑related deaths the previous summer, NGOs demanded additional renovation funding, expanded urban green spaces and rent‑reduction safeguards for poorly insulated apartments.

A EuroMOMO analysis released on 12 July reported more than 10 000 excess deaths across 27 Western European nations during the late‑June heatwave, with over 9 000 among people aged 65 and over. France and Belgium showed “very high” excess mortality; the United Kingdom alone saw about 2 700 heat‑related deaths, 42 % of which were attributed to climate‑change‑driven warming.

A joint study by Imperial College London, the Met Office and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine refined the UK toll to over 2 700 excess deaths – roughly 550 in late May and 2 200 in late June – and noted record temperatures of 37.7 °C. The UK Health Security Agency will publish official figures, while scientists call for workplace temperature limits and wider adoption of air‑conditioning and heat‑pump technologies.

Experts warn that without expanded urban greenery and building upgrades, future heatwaves could cause even higher mortality, reinforcing momentum behind Austria’s greening legislation and broader climate‑adaptation measures.
