Austrian Trade Day addresses food prices and digital innovation

The 2026 Trade Day in Gmunden brought together over 450 representatives from business, politics, and science to discuss the future of the Austrian food industry. Key discussions focused on maintaining affordable food prices amidst rising energy costs, which impact every stage of production from agriculture to retail.

Handelsverband Managing Director Rainer Will noted that Austrian households spend 10.2 percent of their expenditures on food, placing the country near the bottom of EU comparisons. He emphasized that addressing high energy prices is essential for long-term affordability. Agriculture Minister Norbert Totschnig also stressed the importance of maintaining high-quality domestic food production despite cost pressures.

In addition to economic challenges, the event highlighted digital transformation. The Wirtschaftskammer Österreich (WKO) hosted an apprentice hackathon to showcase innovation in the sector. Participants developed digital solutions and prototypes using modern technologies like artificial intelligence to address real-world challenges in the retail industry, aiming to foster future-oriented skills such as problem-solving and digital literacy.
