Austrian trade and retail sector challenges
Overview
Representatives from the Austrian retail and trade sectors have highlighted several systemic challenges facing the industry. During the WKÖ Handelstag, trade division chairman Rainer Trefelik called for a reduction in bureaucracy and the easing of EU regulations to bolster competitiveness during a prolonged crisis. Discussions at this stage also addressed labor shortages, demographic shifts, and the need for digital infrastructure investment, noting that unemployment or training status in the sector rose by 4% compared to the previous year.
Subsequent discussions at the 2026 Trade Day in Gmunden shifted focus toward the food industry and the impact of rising energy costs on affordability. Handelsverband Managing Director Rainer Will noted that Austrian households spend 10.2 percent of their expenditures on food, a figure near the bottom of EU comparisons. To address these economic pressures and the necessity of digital transformation, the Wirtschaftskammer Österreich (WKO) hosted an apprentice hackathon to develop artificial intelligence and other digital solutions for the retail sector.
