Germany to launch unified training for nursing assistants in 2027

From 1 January 2027 Germany will introduce a nationwide, generalist training programme for Pflegefachassistenz (nursing assistants). The 18‑month curriculum replaces the previous 27 fragmented regional regulations and is open to career changers of any age. Participants can first qualify as assistants and later pursue full nursing qualifications. The reform aims to address the growing demand for health‑care staff, offering a clear pathway into a sector described as a “growth market”. It is expected to improve staffing in hospitals, elder‑care facilities and ambulatory services while providing a stable career option for people switching from other professions.

The new training is part of broader efforts to strengthen the German health‑care system and to ensure a qualified workforce for the future.
