Nursing education & development in Austria & Germany
Overview
Building on the June‑July 2026 rollout of new bachelor programmes in health and nursing at Carinthia University of Applied Sciences and a series of career fairs in Austria and Germany, stakeholders continued to broaden nursing education and career pathways. In Germany, Vera Lux, president of the German Nursing Association (DBfK), highlighted a growing demand for roles beyond bedside care, including management, education, consulting and research. She noted that nurses increasingly seek autonomy and better remuneration, prompting many to pursue advanced qualifications. The German Institute for Applied Nursing Research outlined parallel academic and vocational routes, with bachelor‑to‑master tracks lasting five to six years or combined apprenticeship‑degree pathways up to eight years. Emerging specialities such as Advanced Practice Nurse, community health, intensive‑care, palliative care and quality‑risk management are being integrated into curricula, reinforcing the earlier efforts to align training with demographic change and digitalisation.
