Austria's highways face major congestion as summer holidays and festivals begin

With the start of summer holidays across Austria's states and in nearby German regions and parts of the Netherlands, traffic volumes on the country's main motorways are sharply increasing. Experts from ARBÖ and ÖAMTC warn of dense traffic and temporary overloads on the West Autobahn (A1) around Linz and Salzburg, the South Autobahn (A2) near Graz, Klagenfurt and Villach, the Pyhrn Autobahn (A9), the Tauern Autobahn (A10) and the Inntal Autobahn (A12) around Innsbruck. Large events such as Helene Fischer’s concert in Vienna’s Ernst‑Happel‑Stadion (about 55,000 attendees) and the Electric Love Festival at the Salzburgring further strain the road network, prompting recommendations to use train and shuttle services.

In Salzburg, the city is conducting night‑time roadworks from 13 July to 16 July, including milling and resurfacing on Otto‑von‑Lilienthal‑Straße, Siezenheimer Straße, Julius‑Welser‑Straße, Siebenstädter‑Straße and Gaswerkgasse. One lane will remain open on each route, with traffic managed by on‑site personnel. Work hours run from 19:00 to 05:30 (or midnight to 05:00 on some sections), and weather may cause delays of up to a week.
