Austria's national debt rises to 438.9 billion euros

Austria's national debt rose to 438.9 billion euros by the end of June 2026, an increase of 20.5 billion euros compared to the end of 2025. According to data from Statistik Austria, the debt-to-GDP ratio increased from 80.7 percent to 83.6 percent.

During the first half of 2026, state revenues grew by 4.2 percent to 129.7 billion euros, while expenditures rose by 1.9 percent to 140.9 billion euros. This resulted in a budget deficit of 11.1 billion euros, a reduction from the 13.7 billion euro deficit recorded in the first half of 2025. The deficit remains high at 4.3 percent of GDP.

Revenue growth was driven largely by a 5.3 percent increase in social security contributions, though tax revenue growth slowed to 3.2 percent due to lower wage tax collections and decreased revenue from energy and mineral oil taxes. On the expenditure side, growth was tempered by slower increases in public service salaries and monetary social benefits, partly due to lower pension spending. However, interest payments rose from 3.9 billion to 4.3 billion euros within one year.
