Austrian public and national debt trends

Overview

Data from Statistik Austria highlights rising debt levels within Austria at both the regional and national levels.

At the regional level, Steiermark recorded the highest per capita public debt in the country at 8,611 euros per inhabitant, followed by Kärnten and Burgenland. In contrast, Tirol reported the lowest per capita debt at 3,285 euros, with its Governor noting a budget free of new debt.

Nationally, Austria’s total debt rose to 438.9 billion euros by the end of June 2026, an increase of 20.5 billion euros since the end of 2025. This caused the debt-to-GDP ratio to climb from 80.7 percent to 83.6 percent. While the budget deficit for the first half of 2026 was reduced to 11.1 billion euros compared to the previous year, it remained high at 4.3 percent of GDP. Revenue growth was supported by social security contributions, though tax revenue growth slowed, and interest payments increased to 4.3 billion euros.
