Authenticity and Modernity Party leads Morocco's 2026 legislative elections
Following the legislative elections held on September 23, 2026, the Authenticity and Modernity Party emerged as the leading force with 97 seats. The National Rally of Independents secured 66 seats, followed by the Istiqlal Party with 65 seats and the Justice and Development Party with 54 seats. Together, the three parties that formed the previous governing majority maintain a numerical majority in the House of Representatives with 228 out of 395 seats.
The incoming government faces significant social expectations, particularly regarding education, health, employment, and social protection. Within the education sector, workers are seeking the implementation of previous agreements, including supplementary compensation for primary and preparatory school teachers and specialists. Other key demands include reducing weekly teaching hours for primary school staff and reviewing school curricula.
Additionally, discussions regarding tax reform remain prominent. The Authenticity and Modernity Party has proposed restructuring income tax by exempting gross salaries below 15,000 dirhams, following a 2025 reform that increased the annual tax-exempt threshold.
