Authenticity and Modernity Party wins most seats in Morocco elections
Morocco's Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) emerged as the largest winner in the September 23, 2026, legislative elections, securing 97 seats in the 395-seat House of Representatives. Despite this victory, PAM fell short of the 198 seats required for an absolute majority, necessitating the formation of a governing coalition. The National Rally of Independents (RNI) followed in second place with 66 seats, while the Istiqlal Party took third with 65 seats.
The Justice and Development Party (PJD) saw a significant resurgence, increasing its seat count to 54, up from 13 in 2021. This comeback positions the moderate Islamist party as a notable force in the political landscape, though a coalition with PAM remains unlikely due to historical rivalries.
Voter turnout was recorded at 38 percent of the 15.8 million registered voters, marking one of the lowest participation rates in recent years. Analysts suggest this decline reflects widespread public disengagement following socioeconomic protests.
Amidst the political transition, authorities in Tangier have launched an investigation into alleged electoral fraud, resulting in the arrest of five individuals, including electoral commission officials, suspected of manipulating ballots.
