Morocco 2026 election campaign launch and economic debate
Overview
As the September 23, 2026, legislative elections approach, Morocco has officially launched its electoral campaign. The race for 395 seats in the House of Representatives involves 1,850 candidacy lists featuring 7,288 candidates from 27 to 28 political parties, averaging more than 18 candidates per seat. Of these nominees, women represent 36.47 percent (2,658 individuals). Among those seeking re-election are 227 current members of Parliament. The Ministry of Interior reports over 15.8 million registered voters.
Political parties are intensifying their campaigns by focusing on economic solutions to address unemployment and purchasing power. Fouzi Lekjaa of the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) emphasized in Marrakech that debates must shift toward concrete proposals to improve daily life, noting that measures like raising the minimum wage to 5,000 dirhams must be evaluated for feasibility.
Financial commitments are defining the competition. The National Rally of Independents (RNI) estimates a need for 224 billion dirhams for its five-year program, while the PAM proposes 350 billion dirhams. The Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS) has suggested 575 billion dirhams in additional spending against 622 billion dirhams in additional revenue. Conversely, the Justice and Development Party (PJD) has declined to set specific numerical targets for growth, wages, or job creation.
The Moroccan Organization for Human Rights has urged responsible participation, warning against the “exploitation of social vulnerability” and the use of “hate speech or disinformation.” Authorities have also emphasized strict regulations to prevent the use of digital misinformation or artificial intelligence to influence voters.
