Author Charlie Higson predicts backlash over new James Bond casting

James Bond author Charlie Higson has stated that producers face an impossible task in casting the lead for Bond 26, predicting that public backlash is inevitable regardless of the selection. Higson noted that the decision will likely face criticism, drawing parallels to the initial reception of Daniel Craig, whose blonde hair and rugged appearance were initially contested before his successful tenure.

Regarding current frontrunners, Higson described Jack Lowden as an “unconvincing” choice. He also commented on other contenders, suggesting Jacob Elordi is “too tall” and Callum Turner possesses “unconventional looks.” While Higson stated that the character could be played by a Black actor, he argued against gender-flipping the role, asserting that the character is a “representation of manhood and manliness.”

Screenwriter Steven Knight has recently suggested that a new actor may have already been secretly cast, noting that knowing the identity has assisted in the scriptwriting process.
