Authorities in Malaysia and Singapore intercept large quantities of smuggled cigarettes
Law enforcement agencies in Malaysia and Singapore have intercepted significant shipments of untaxed cigarettes in separate incidents.
In Tawau, Malaysia, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) seized approximately 200,000 sticks of untaxed white cigarettes. The seizure occurred near Kampung Titingan after a speedboat attempting to enter Malaysian waters from a neighboring country suffered engine failure during a pursuit. The suspect fled the scene, leaving behind the vessel and cargo, which have a combined estimated value of RM190,000. The case is under investigation pursuant to the Customs Act 1967.
In Singapore, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) discovered over 800 cartons of illegal cigarettes hidden beneath vegetables in a Malaysian-registered lorry. A 33-year-old Malaysian driver was arrested following the discovery. In a related incident at the Woodlands Checkpoint, authorities also intercepted a Malaysian-registered car containing more than 700 cartons and 2,000 packets of duty-unpaid cigarettes concealed in modified compartments.
