Malaysia-Singapore border smuggling enforcement
Overview
Authorities in Malaysia and Singapore have conducted several operations targeting the illegal movement of goods and currency across their borders.
In Johor Bahru, Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency officials detained a Malaysian couple attempting to transport approximately RM2.9 million in undeclared cash toward Singapore. The funds, consisting of Malaysian Ringgit and Singapore Dollars, were found hidden in a vehicle. The individuals claimed to be traveling for tourism, but officials are investigating the purpose of the undeclared sum.
Separate enforcement actions targeted cigarette smuggling. In Tawau, Malaysia, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency seized 200,000 sticks of untaxed cigarettes after a speedboat suffered engine failure during a pursuit. Meanwhile, in Singapore, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority intercepted large quantities of illegal cigarettes hidden in a Malaysian-registered lorry and a car at the Woodlands Checkpoint.
