Authorities intervene in illegal mining in Peru and address amoeba detection in Mexico

Authorities in Peru and Mexico have conducted significant enforcement and health actions in their respective regions.

In Cusco, Peru, the Public Prosecutor's Office and the National Police intervened in illegal mining camps in the Colquemarca district of Chumbivilcas. The operation targeted mining logistics, resulting in the seizure of heavy machinery and the destruction of equipment, including loaders, motorcycles, and water pumps. Officials noted that the illegal activities were conducted near water bodies without authorization, posing an imminent risk of environmental contamination. Several individuals were detained during the raid, including a minor.

In Yucatán, Mexico, the state government confirmed the presence of Naegleria fowleri, commonly known as the “brain-eating amoeba,” in the artificial lake at Plaza La Isla. The discovery follows the death of a 34-year-old man from meningoencephalitis. While officials stated there is no risk to the general population as the amoeba is not transmitted person-to-person or through drinking water, the lake remains closed. An investigation is underway to determine if maintenance companies failed to comply with water quality regulations.
