Automakers advance hybrid vehicle technology in Malaysia

Automakers in Malaysia are advancing hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) technologies. GWM Malaysia has introduced the 2026 GWM Tank 500 HEV, which focuses on enhanced smartphone connectivity through the GWM Intelligent Application. This system allows owners to remotely control the engine, air-conditioning, seat ventilation, and air purifier, while also monitoring vehicle status such as fuel levels, tyre pressure, and security settings like door and window status.

Separately, Proton showcased its HEV hybrid system at the Global Automotive and Technology Expo (GATE) 2026. The system, which is expected to debut in the upcoming AMA02 SUV, is a version of Geely’s i-HEV powertrain. It features a 1.5-litre dedicated hybrid engine (DHE) running on an Atkinson cycle, paired with a one-speed 11-in-1 dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT) and dual motors.
