Hybrid vehicle technology expansion in Asia-Pacific
Overview
Automakers are expanding hybrid vehicle offerings and technological capabilities across the Asia-Pacific region.
In Australia, GWM announced the upcoming launch of the Cannon Hi4-T PHEV, a plug-in hybrid utility vehicle. The model utilizes Hi4-T intelligent hybrid technology, combining a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor to produce 310kW of power. The vehicle features a 33.1kWh battery with a claimed 115km electric-only range and a total combined range of 1,037km.
In Malaysia, manufacturers are advancing hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) technologies. GWM Malaysia introduced the 2026 GWM Tank 500 HEV, which emphasizes smartphone connectivity for remote vehicle control and monitoring. Additionally, Proton showcased a hybrid system at the Global Automotive and Technology Expo (GATE) 2026.
