Automakers shift EV strategies in India as VinFast raises prices
Major automakers are shifting their strategies in the Indian electric vehicle (EV) market. Maruti Suzuki is developing a compact electric hatchback on its new K-EV platform, expected to debut in the 2026-27 financial year. This model, potentially featuring a 29kWh battery and a range of approximately 270 kilometers, aims to provide an affordable option for urban environments.
Hyundai Motor India has also confirmed plans to launch a compact electric SUV by March 2027, likely inspired by the global Hyundai Inster EV.
In contrast to the push for affordability by domestic and established players, VinFast has implemented price increases for its VF6 and VF7 electric SUVs in India. The VF6 saw a uniform increase of Rs 90,000 across all variants, while the larger VF7 experienced steeper hikes ranging from Rs 1.10 lakh to Rs 1.13 lakh. These adjustments signal a move away from VinFast's initial introductory pricing strategy as the brand expands its local presence.
