Automakers target India's sub-4-metre SUV segment

Automakers are intensifying competition in India's high-volume sub-4-metre SUV segment with new model announcements and sightings.

Volkswagen has confirmed it will launch a new compact SUV in 2027. Built on the India-specific MQB-A0-IN platform, the vehicle will be locally manufactured to improve accessibility and reduce ownership costs. The brand aims to leverage the platform's ability to accommodate modern safety systems and powertrains tailored to local emission regulations to expand its presence in the country.

Meanwhile, Mahindra is developing the Vision S, a rugged, lifestyle-oriented sub-4-metre SUV based on the NU IQ platform. Recent sightings of a test mule in Himachal Pradesh suggest the model may include a diesel variant and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). The Vision S features a tall, boxy profile designed to maximize interior space and road presence.
