Mahindra SUV line expansion includes hybrid prototype
Entities: Renault · Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd · Mahindra Scorpio-N · XUV 7XO · India
Overview
Mahindra’s SUV programme continues to broaden. The Vision T electric off‑road SUV, built on the NU‑IQ platform and able to accommodate ICE, hybrid or full‑electric powertrains, remains slated for production in late 2026 or early 2027. The 2026 Scorpio N has entered its mid‑life facelift stage, with a preview on 26 July confirming retention of its 2.0 L turbo‑petrol and 2.2 L diesel engines, 6‑speed manual or automatic gearboxes, 4WD for higher‑spec diesel variants, a 10.25‑inch touchscreen, fully digital instrument cluster, panoramic sunroof, redesigned centre console, new alloy‑wheel designs and minor exterior tweaks. Level‑2 ADAS features will be standard, and the facelift is expected in showrooms by mid‑August 2024.
Mahindra is now testing a heavily camouflaged prototype of the XUV 7XO SUV, expected to become the company’s first strong‑hybrid model. The hybrid version may use a series‑parallel powertrain similar to those in the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, with launch targeted for 2027‑2028. It will retain the standard SUV’s silhouette while adding fuel‑saving technology and a suite of premium features.
Renault meanwhile announced plans for two hybrid SUVs for India – a Duster Hybrid pairing a 1.8‑L petrol engine with a 49‑bhp electric motor and a three‑row, seven‑seat Duster‑based SUV slated for 2027 – underscoring a wider shift toward hybrid SUVs in the market.
In the same segment, Tata Motors is developing two sub‑4 m SUVs – the “Scarlet” and a next‑generation Nexon – targeting a 2027 launch, while Skoda Auto India has confirmed a facelift for the Slavia sedan scheduled for 18 August. Together these moves highlight a surge of new and refreshed SUV offerings in India’s crowded market.
