Automakers target urban markets with compact off-road SUVs

Major automotive manufacturers are expanding their off-road lineups with compact models designed for urban environments.

Land Rover has confirmed the 2027 launch of a compact Defender, internally referred to as the ‘Baby Defender’ or ‘Defender 80’. The vehicle will be built on the Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA) platform, debuting as a fully electric model before offering hybrid options. The SUV is expected to be approximately 4.50 meters long, making it more maneuverable in cities while maintaining the brand’s signature design language. Technical features include high-density flat batteries and an 800-volt electrical system capable of 350 kW fast charging.

Meanwhile, Toyota has released the Land Cruiser FJ, a smaller version of its traditional off-road family aimed primarily at Asian markets. The FJ is 350mm shorter and 125mm narrower than the Land Cruiser 250, featuring a 2.7-liter gasoline engine and a six-speed automatic transmission. According to chief engineer Masaya Uchiyama, sales in Japan have significantly exceeded targets, with approximately 12,000 units sold between mid-May and August, alongside positive performance in Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam.
