Automaker development of compact off-road SUVs

Overview

Automakers are increasingly developing compact off-road SUVs tailored for urban environments and specific regional markets.

Land Rover has confirmed plans for a 2027 launch of a compact Defender, referred to as the ‘Baby Defender’ or ‘Defender 80’. Built on the Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA) platform, the vehicle is expected to be approximately 4.50 meters long. It will debut as a fully electric model featuring high-density flat batteries, an 800-volt electrical system, and 350 kW fast charging before hybrid options are introduced.

Toyota’s Land Cruiser FJ, a smaller model built on the IMV platform and manufactured in Thailand, continues to expand its global presence. The FJ is 350mm shorter and 125mm narrower than the Land Cruiser 250, featuring a 2.7-liter gasoline engine and a six-speed automatic transmission. While initially seeing strong sales in Japan, Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam, Japanese-spec versions have begun arriving in Hong Kong through parallel importers to meet high demand caused by supply shortages. Chief engineer Masaya Uchiyama noted that sales in Japan significantly exceeded targets, with approximately 12,000 units sold between mid-May and August 2026.

In October 2026, Kalla Toyota previewed the retro-styled, five-seater Land Cruiser FJ at the Toyota Auto Show 2026 in Makassar, Indonesia. The SUV, which features a ladder-frame chassis and is available in standard and adventure types, is expected to be priced below Rp 1 billion. Kalla Toyota has already begun accepting pre-orders to gauge interest in Eastern Indonesia.
