Automotive manufacturers advance specialized combustion engine technologies

Automotive manufacturers are continuing to develop specialized internal combustion engine technologies alongside electrification.

BMW has announced plans for the 2027 Serie 3, which will include combustion engine options. The M350 xDrive variant is expected to feature a 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder engine paired with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, producing 443 hp. A new ‘Drift Moment’ feature will allow drivers to send power to the rear axle for controlled drifting, a capability previously reserved for M division models.

Separately, Horse—a joint venture between Renault and Geely—has unveiled the B20 engine. Designed for electrified off-road vehicles (HEV, PHEV, and EREV), the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine is engineered to withstand water immersion of up to 1.1 meters. The engine features IPX8-certified components, including sealed wiring and waterproof sensors, to enhance durability in off-road environments.
