Automotive manufacturer engine technology developments

Automotive manufacturers are advancing specialized internal combustion and hybrid technologies alongside electrification efforts.

BMW is developing its next-generation Series 3, which will utilize a ‘technologically open propulsion concept.’ This includes fully electric versions and internal combustion engines equipped with 48V mild hybrid technology. Recent developments for the 2027 model include the M350 xDrive variant, featuring a 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder engine and a new ‘Drift Moment’ feature for controlled drifting. Testing for these models has taken place at locations including the Miramas proving ground, Arjeplog, and the Nürburgring.

In a separate development, the Horse joint venture between Renault and Geely unveiled the B20 engine. This 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine is designed for electrified off-road vehicles, including HEV, PHEV, and EREV models. The engine is engineered for durability in off-road environments, featuring IPX8-certified components capable of withstanding water immersion of up to 1.1 meters.
