China automotive exports exceed one million units in July 2026
China's automotive export sector reached a significant milestone in July 2026, with total monthly exports exceeding one million units for the first time. This represents an 81.3% year-on-year increase. New energy vehicles (NEVs) are a primary driver of this growth, accounting for over 50% of all vehicle exports for the second consecutive month. NEV exports specifically reached 553,000 units in July, a 1.5-fold increase compared to the previous year.
This surge in exports occurs as the domestic market faces challenges. Passenger vehicle retail sales in China fell approximately 20.2% in the first half of 2026. To maintain growth, Chinese manufacturers are increasingly targeting international markets, including Brazil and Africa.
In the battery sector, CATL remains the dominant player in China with a 42.33% market share of EV battery installations as of July 2026. BYD has also expanded its presence, increasing its market share to 19.23%. Meanwhile, regulatory bodies like the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) are implementing stricter safety standards for power batteries and initiating specialized safety evaluations for sodium-ion battery technology.
