German automaker sales and Chinese market shifts 2026

Overview

In the first half of 2026, German luxury automakers faced a sharp decline in China. BMW’s Chinese deliveries fell 20.4%, Mercedes-Benz dropped 28%, and Volkswagen's volumes fell 25.9%, contributing to a 24% contraction of the German luxury market in China. This slump signals the weakening of the subsidy-driven joint-venture model. By the second quarter, BMW’s challenges in China intensified, with sales dropping 30.2%. This decline contributed to a more than 60% shrinkage in the company’s automotive operating profit, leaving an operating margin of 2.3%. A primary driver is BMW’s struggle to compete in the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) segment, where it holds only about 5% market share despite EVs accounting for roughly 46% of the total Chinese market. Furthermore, European manufacturers have warned of declining annual profits as Chinese competitors capture nearly 10% of the European market through more affordable pricing. In contrast, European registration data showed resilience and a rapid transition to electrified powertrains. BMW registrations rose 2.1%, while its MINI brand surged 20.4%. Audi overtook Mercedes to take second place in the market. The shift toward electrification is marked by battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) reaching a 20.7% market share and hybrids holding 37.3%. Conversely, internal-combustion models fell below 30% combined. Specifically, diesel market share in the EU plummeted to 7.5%, down from over 55% a decade earlier. By July 2026, the Chinese passenger car market recorded its tenth consecutive month of decline, with demand falling 20.5% in the first seven months of the year due to weakened consumption and rising fuel prices. To manage domestic surpluses, Chinese manufacturers are aggressively expanding exports, with BEV and plug-in hybrid exports surging 143% year-on-year. Companies like BYD are targeting Europe, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and South America. Simultaneously, major German automotive suppliers, including ZF, Continental, and Schaeffler, are facing financial strain.
