Automotive sector updates: Opel expands Frontera range and Continental grows tire offerings

The automotive and electric vehicle sectors are seeing several strategic developments. Opel has expanded its Frontera crossover lineup with the introduction of a new Turbo 100 engine. This 1.2-liter, 100 CV three-cylinder engine features a six-speed manual transmission and utilizes a variable geometry turbocharger and Miller cycle combustion to improve efficiency. Alongside this engine, Opel launched the Frontera Start, an entry-level trim focused on value, featuring essential driver assistance systems and a smartphone-based infotainment solution.

In the electric vehicle infrastructure sector, Electra is accelerating its high-speed charging network in Italy, supported by 7 million euros in Pnrr funds. The company has installed 338 ultra-fast charging points across 11 regions, including stations with power up to 600 kW. Meanwhile, Plenitude On The Road announced the return of monthly subscription plans for EV charging, effective October 2026, offering various kWh packages for different charging speeds.

In the tire industry, Continental has announced plans to release over 650 new Ultra High Performance (UHP) tire measurements by the end of 2027. This expansion aims to meet the demands of larger, heavier, and more powerful vehicles, including SUVs and electric cars, by focusing on rim sizes of 18 inches and larger.
