Project Hunter creates autonomous Golf GTI-inspired robotic lawn mower
German YouTuber Nils, creator of the “Project Hunter” channel, has developed a fully functional autonomous robotic lawn mower inspired by the second-generation Volkswagen Golf GTI.
The custom-built machine features a 3D-printed body that took over 100 hours to produce, replicating iconic GTI details such as the black grille, round headlights, and BBS-style wheels. Built on an aluminum frame, the mower is powered by a brushless motor and includes an adjustable cutting height system.
To ensure autonomous operation, the device utilizes four ultrasonic sensors, contact switches on the bumpers, and a current monitoring system to detect electrical spikes. A specialized thermal camera allows the robot to identify small animals, such as hedgehogs, triggering an automatic stop of both movement and blades to prevent injury. Users can control the mower, monitor battery life, and view live camera feeds via a smartphone application.
