Waymo expands robotaxi service to three U.S. cities and plans Munich launch
Waymo, an Alphabet subsidiary, is significantly expanding its autonomous vehicle operations. The company has launched driverless taxi services in three new U.S. cities: Denver, San Diego, and Tampa, bringing its total U.S. operational footprint to 14 cities. In Denver, the service marks the company's first commercial deployment in a region with significant snowfall. Waymo is also deploying its sixth-generation autonomous driving system, including the new Ojai electric robotaxi model.
Internationally, Waymo has announced plans to enter the European market, with Munich, Germany, slated to become its first European hub by the end of 2027. The company will begin with a mapping and testing phase involving human safety drivers to adapt to local traffic conditions.
Competition in the sector remains intense. Amazon-owned Zoox has announced the expansion of its testing operations to Houston and San Diego. While Waymo reports that its vehicles experience significantly fewer accidents than human drivers, experts have raised security concerns. Specifically, engineers have warned that autonomous fleets could be vulnerable to hacking, potentially allowing bad actors to control vehicles for criminal or terrorist purposes.
