Osteoporosis awareness: Global health initiatives and prevention

World Osteoporosis Day, observed on October 20, serves as a global platform to raise awareness about bone density loss and fracture prevention. Medical professionals and health organizations are emphasizing that osteoporosis often develops without clear symptoms, making early diagnosis through bone density testing crucial.

In Europe, the disease affects millions, with significant risks for women post-menopause due to declining estrogen levels. In Croatia, medical teams at the General Hospital 'dr. Josip Benčević' have launched educational campaigns to communicate the importance of bone health. Similarly, in Germany, the Deutsche Psoriasis Bund and University Hospital Erlangen are hosting events to discuss chronic bone and joint conditions.

Key prevention strategies include maintaining adequate calcium and vitamin D intake, engaging in regular weight-bearing and strength exercises, and improving balance to prevent falls. Experts note that after a hip fracture, only a small percentage of patients return to their previous quality of life, highlighting the necessity of proactive management.
