Autumn gardening: Essential pruning tasks for October
October is a critical month for garden maintenance to ensure healthy growth and flowering in the following year. Key tasks include pruning climbing roses, lavender, and deciduous hedges.
For climbing roses, tying main stems horizontally and shortening side shoots encourages more even flowering. Pruning these in autumn helps improve air circulation, which reduces the risk of fungal diseases like black spot that overwinter on infected stems and fallen leaves. However, rambling roses should only be pruned immediately after flowering.
Lavender requires trimming of spent flower stalks and approximately 2–3cm of leafy growth to maintain a compact shape, though gardeners should avoid cutting into bare, woody stems. Additionally, October serves as the final month for trimming deciduous hedges such as beech, hornbeam, and hawthorn to maintain their shape through winter. When working, it is important to check for wildlife before beginning.
