Autumn tree planting guidelines and best practices
Autumn is an ideal season for planting various types of trees, as the moderate temperatures and frequent rainfall support root system development. For fruit trees, the optimal planting window typically begins in mid-September and continues until the ground freezes.
Deciduous trees and shrubs can be planted in late autumn provided the soil remains workable. However, evergreen and coniferous species should be planted earlier to allow sufficient time for winter preparation. When selecting saplings, those with exposed root systems are often more affordable but must be planted quickly to prevent drying. In contrast, container-grown plants are more resilient to delays because their roots remain protected by soil.
While container-grown plants can be planted throughout the growing season, trees with bare roots are best suited for the spring and autumn periods. Gardeners are advised to select species that match their local environmental conditions to ensure long-term survival.
