Autumn walking tips for accessibility and pet safety in the Netherlands

As autumn arrives, several resources are available for accessible nature walks in the Netherlands. Organizations such as Staatsbosbeheer and Natuurmonumenten offer numerous routes specifically designed for walkers using rollators or wheelchairs. These paths are generally shorter, wider, and consist of semi-paved surfaces to avoid obstacles like sand or narrow forest trails.

Notable accessible locations include the De Wieden boardwalk in Sint Jansklooster, Overijssel, which features a paved route through marshes and reedlands. Another option is the Waterloopbos in Marknesse, Flevoland, a former research site for hydraulic engineering.

Pet owners are cautioned to be vigilant during autumn walks. Acorns contain tannic acid, which is toxic to dogs and can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or kidney damage. Additionally, wild horse chestnuts are toxic to dogs, potentially leading to gastrointestinal distress. There is also a significant risk of intestinal blockages if dogs swallow chestnuts or pinecones. Owners are advised to use toys instead of natural objects and to keep dogs close to prevent ingestion of toxic flora.
