Auvergne Region Faces Surge in Summer Drownings, Officials Urge Early Water Safety Training

Public health data shows a sharp rise in drownings across France this summer, with 1,418 incidents and 409 fatalities recorded between June and September 2025. The Auvergne‑Rhône‑Alpes region accounts for 114 drownings, highlighting the danger posed by lakes, rivers, ponds and private pools in inland areas.

Local authorities in the Auvergne lakes warn that drownings often occur silently. "Contrairement à ce que l’on peut croire, ce n’est pas quelque chose de spectaculaire et de visible," said Frédéric Dalmas, responsible for swimming safety at Lac d’Aydat. Prevention campaigns stress supervision, radio communication among lifeguards and mandatory swimming lessons for children. Swim Stars director Leïla stresses that "Il ne faut jamais détourner le regard de son enfant près de l’eau" and promotes the "Autorescue" program to teach basic survival skills from age three.

Efforts include expanding public swimming schools, integrating three cycles of water‑safety education in primary schools and encouraging private pool owners to supervise children closely. Officials urge families to avoid solitary swimming, respect supervised zones and use life‑jacket equipment, but emphasize that formal training remains the most reliable safeguard.
