Avante party seeks to join PRD and Solidariedade federation
The Avante party has filed a request with Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court (TSE) to join the Renovação Solidária federation, which currently consists of the Partido Renovação Democrática (PRD) and Solidariedade. The move aims to ensure the three parties maintain access to the Party Fund and free electoral advertising time after failing to meet the individual performance thresholds required by the electoral barrier clause in the 2026 elections.
The Attorney General’s Office (PGE) has issued a favorable opinion regarding the request. The PGE indicated that while Avante’s separate participation in elections prevents the pooling of votes for electoral quotients, it may still allow for the joint counting of votes to satisfy the barrier clause requirements.
The parties are seeking a provisional decision from the TSE before January 1, 2027, to ensure recognition before the new legislature begins. If approved, the federation would operate jointly across Brazil with a commitment to remain united for at least four years. In the state of Goiás, the merger would specifically impact the Goiânia City Council and the Legislative Assembly.
