Brazilian political party reorganization efforts

The Solidariedade party began evaluating strategic options to navigate Brazil’s electoral barrier clause, which requires a minimum vote percentage to access party funds and media advertising. Leadership, led by president Paulinho da Força, considered either a merger with the Avante party or joining the existing Renovação Solidária federation, which includes the Partido Renovação Democrática (PRD).

Following these discussions, the Avante party formally requested to join the Renovação Solidária federation through Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court (TSE). This move seeks to ensure the three parties maintain access to the Party Fund and electoral advertising time after failing to meet individual performance thresholds in the 2026 elections. The Attorney General’s Office (PGE) issued a favorable opinion, noting that while Avante’s separate participation prevents pooling votes for electoral quotients, it may allow for joint counting to satisfy barrier clause requirements. The parties are seeking a decision before January 1, 2027, to ensure recognition before the new legislature begins.
