Turkey municipal officials face corruption probes and arrests
Turkey is seeing a wave of legal actions and corruption investigations targeting various political figures and municipal officials.
In Manisa, Yeni Parti Provincial Chair İlksen Özalper has been arrested as part of a bribery and organized crime investigation conducted by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. The investigation, supported by MASAK reports, also led to the arrests of a municipal advisor, a driver, and a general manager.
In Istanbul, Avcılar Mayor Utku Caner Çaykara was released from Silivri Prison under judicial control following his detention in a bribery and tender fraud case linked to an alleged criminal organization. Çaykara denied all charges, stating he was not a public official at the time of the alleged offenses.
Additionally, legal scrutiny continues regarding former Ankara Mayor Melih Gökçek. A criminal complaint filed by current Mayor Mansur Yavaş regarding the alleged misuse of 536 million TL intended for the Tatlar Wastewater Treatment Plant was not processed after investigators denied permission for a formal probe into Gökçek.
