Avellino and Irpinia pursue Mediterranean economic integration
Stakeholders in Avellino and the Irpinia region are focusing on strategic economic development to position the area as a central hub within Mediterranean trade dynamics. A recent public meeting organized by the Associazione Insieme per Avellino e l’Irpinia, the National Coordination of Small Municipalities, and SVIMAR aimed to foster dialogue between political actors, industry associations, and successful local businesses.
Key discussions centered on leveraging the territory's geographic position between the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic seas. Participants emphasized the importance of improving infrastructure, specifically rail connections such as the electrification of the Salerno-Avellino-Benevento line, to reduce regional isolation.
In a related institutional development, the Prefect of Avellino, Franca Fico, met with Benjamin Hanna, the Deputy Chief of Mission of the German Embassy in Rome. The meeting focused on strengthening ties between Irpinia and Germany, highlighting opportunities in the agri-food sector (specifically DOP and DOCG products), mechatronics, automotive, energy, and technological innovation. The dialogue also addressed policies to support internal areas and combat depopulation, building on historical social and economic links between the two regions.
