Economic and cultural development in Avellino and Irpinia

Stakeholders in the Avellino and Irpinia regions are pursuing strategic initiatives to enhance regional development through economic integration and cultural promotion.

Initial efforts focused on positioning the area as a Mediterranean trade hub by improving infrastructure, such as the electrification of the Salerno-Avellino-Benevento rail line, and strengthening institutional ties with Germany. These discussions highlighted opportunities in the agri-food, mechatronics, and energy sectors to combat regional depopulation.

Subsequent efforts have expanded to include cultural and experiential tourism. The ‘Praesentia. Gusto di Campania Divina’ project aims to valorize inland areas by connecting local cuisine with community memory.

A recent installment of this initiative, titled ‘Il bosco e la vite. Maritata, fusilli e mugliatielli’, is scheduled for October 26 at the former Bourbon Prison complex in Avellino. Promoted by the Campania Region’s Tourism Department, the event features museum visits, discussions on nutrition and well-being, show cooking, and Neapolitan classical music. The program highlights traditional Irpinian dishes, such as handmade fusilli and minestra maritata, to showcase the region’s pastoral and agricultural heritage. Key participants include Anna Maria Colao of the Higher Institute of Health and writer Franco Arminio.
