Avengers: Endgame Encore overtakes Avatar as highest-grossing film

The film ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ has reclaimed the title of the highest-grossing movie of all time, narrowly surpassing James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’. Following its second weekend, the re-release has reached a global total of $2.925 billion, edging out ‘Avatar’ by less than $2 million.

The re-release, which includes additional footage to prepare audiences for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, earned $86 million worldwide during its opening weekend. This marks a continuation of a long-standing rivalry for the box office record that has spanned several years.

Previously, ‘Avatar’ held the top spot for a decade until ‘Endgame’ briefly overtook it in 2019. However, ‘Avatar’ regained the lead in 2021 following a re-release in China and further extended its earnings in 2022 ahead of the release of ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’. The current margin between the two films is so slim that future theatrical runs for either franchise could shift the ranking again.
