Avengers: Endgame reclaims highest-grossing film title from Avatar
Avengers: Endgame has reclaimed the title of the highest-grossing film of all time, surpassing Avatar following a successful theatrical re-release titled ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’. The Marvel Studios blockbuster has reached a global lifetime gross of approximately $2.925 billion, narrowly edging out James Cameron’s Avatar, which stands at roughly $2.923 billion.
The re-release, which began in late September 2026, has generated over $126 million in additional revenue worldwide. This special edition includes four new scenes designed to bridge the gap between the 2019 film and the upcoming ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, scheduled for release in December 2026. The new footage features elements such as the Time Variance Authority (TVA) and provides a glimpse of Robert Downey Jr. in his new role as Doctor Doom.
This victory marks the third time the top spot has swapped between these two films. While Avatar held the record for nearly a decade after its 2009 debut, Endgame first overtook it in 2019, only to lose the lead again in 2021 following an Avatar re-release in China. The current resurgence highlights the commercial strength of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and serves as a strategic promotional tool for Disney ahead of the next major Avengers installment.
