Brazil election: Lula proposes student aid while Flávio Bolsonaro tours the South

As the Brazilian presidential election approaches, candidates are intensifying their campaigns through policy announcements and regional tours. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has proposed a university-level expansion of the ‘Pé-de-Meia’ program. If implemented, the initiative would provide students with monthly payments of R$ 700 for ten months, plus an annual payment of R$ 2,500, totaling R$ 10,000 by graduation. The program is estimated to cost approximately R$ 4.6 billion annually.

Simultaneously, Flávio Bolsonaro is conducting a campaign tour in Southern Brazil, accompanied by a delegation of governors and senators, including Tarcísio de Freitas and Jorginho Mello. Analysts suggest his campaign represents a shift away from the traditional militarism seen in previous right-wing movements in the country.

Political mobilization remains high across various regions. Supporters of Lula have organized demonstrations at the UFRJ campus and in cities like Campinas and São Paulo. Meanwhile, the government has also introduced measures to support microentrepreneurs (MEIs) and a new decree to allow the blocking of mobile phones in prisons without judicial authorization to combat organized crime.
