São Paulo Avenida Paulista political demonstrations

Overview

In early October 2026, a dispute emerged in São Paulo regarding a planned Workers’ Party (PT) demonstration on Avenida Paulista ahead of the first round of elections. While Mayor Ricardo Nunes denied banning the event, a judge from the Regional Electoral Court of São Paulo (TRE-SP) suspended a municipal restrictive order, ruling that the city lacks police power over electoral propaganda. The TRE-SP authorized the demonstration, which was expected to include President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, provided that organizers did not block traffic or obstruct Electoral Justice operations.

Following the demonstration on October 11, reports emerged of vandalism and property damage at the Consolação and Trianon-Masp metro stations. The São Paulo Metro confirmed that eight access covers were damaged, and several stations faced temporary closures. Opposition leaders criticized the unrest; Senator Flávio Bolsonaro compared the scene to ‘The Walking Dead’, while Federal Deputy Nikolas Ferreira and Senator-elect Carlos Bolsonaro questioned whether the judiciary would apply the same legal rigor to these acts as seen during the January 8, 2023, incidents. In response, the Lula campaign filed a legal complaint with the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), accusing opposition figures of spreading fake news by using footage from unrelated protests in Chile.

Amidst this friction, President Lula has detailed his ‘Pé-de-Meia Universitário’ proposal to support public university and Prouni scholarship students. The initiative aims to provide a monthly stipend of R$ 700 for ten months, plus an annual payment of R$ 2,500, totaling R$ 10,000 by graduation. The program is estimated to cost approximately R$ 4.6 billion annually.
