Avian influenza detected in Cabo Rojo and Lajas

The Department of Agriculture has confirmed cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in the municipalities of Cabo Rojo and Lajas. The discovery follows reports of multiple bird deaths at two specific properties, including approximately 20 domestic ducks in Cabo Rojo and about 30 Guinea fowl along with other species in Lajas.

Authorities have implemented 120-day quarantines on the affected properties and activated strict biosecurity, epidemiological surveillance, and sanitary control measures to prevent the virus from spreading. These protocols include restrictions on bird movement, disinfection of personnel, equipment, and vehicles, and controlled access to the sites.

While the risk to the general population is considered low, officials warn that individuals in direct contact with infected birds or contaminated environments face higher exposure. The public is urged to avoid touching or moving sick or dead birds without proper protection. Local farmers in the southwest region are also increasing vigilance and biosecurity protocols to protect their flocks.
