Avian influenza outbreak in Puerto Rico
Overview
The Puerto Rico Department of Agriculture began investigating suspected highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) following multiple bird deaths in the municipalities of Cabo Rojo and Lajas. Initial reports indicated approximately 20 ducks died in Cabo Rojo and about 30 Guinea fowl, among other species, died in Lajas.
Following laboratory confirmation of HPAI, authorities implemented 120-day quarantines on the affected properties. To prevent further spread, officials activated strict biosecurity, epidemiological surveillance, and sanitary control measures, including restrictions on bird movement and the disinfection of personnel, equipment, and vehicles.
While officials stated the risk to the general population is low, they warned that individuals in direct contact with infected birds or contaminated environments face higher exposure. Local farmers in the southwest region have been advised to increase vigilance and biosecurity protocols.
