Uruguay declares sanitary emergency after avian influenza outbreak

Uruguay has declared a national sanitary emergency following the confirmation of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5) in backyard poultry in the Colonia department. The outbreak, identified as Foco 9/2026, was detected in a subsistence property near Barker.

In response, authorities have implemented several containment measures, including the confinement of backyard and free-range birds, the suspension of poultry fairs, auctions, and exhibitions, and restrictions on the movement of unregistered poultry. Epidemiological investigations are underway, involving the culling and disinfection of affected areas.

While the emergency is nationwide, the Uruguayan Chamber of Poultry Processors (Cupra) and the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP) have emphasized that commercial poultry production remains unaffected, as the outbreak is located far from industrial concentration zones. There is currently no reported risk to human health.

Neighboring Paraguay has also activated its highest level of sanitary alert through Senacsa. The agency has reinforced surveillance at entry points and urged citizens to immediately report any sick or dead birds to prevent the spread of the disease within its territory.
