H5 avian influenza outbreak in Uruguay
Overview
Uruguay declared a nationwide health emergency after highly pathogenic H5 avian influenza was confirmed in backyard birds in the Colonia department. The outbreak, identified as Foco 9/2026, was detected on a subsistence property near Barker.
In response, the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP) prohibited the movement of unregistered poultry and required backyard and free-range birds to be kept in closed, roofed facilities. All poultry-related fairs, auctions, and exhibitions, including the Expo Prado, were suspended. Epidemiological investigations are currently underway, involving the culling and disinfection of affected areas.
Both the MGAP and the Uruguayan Chamber of Poultry Processors (Cupra) have emphasized that commercial poultry production remains unaffected because the outbreak is located far from industrial concentration zones. Authorities noted that poultry consumption poses no risk to human health.
The detection triggered regional sanitary alerts. Paraguay’s sanitary agency, Senacsa, activated its highest level of alert, instructing officials to intensify surveillance at entry points and urging citizens to report sick or dead birds immediately to prevent contagion.
